Biography

John Gardner was born on the Iowa-Nebraska border in the USA. As a boy his father gave him a camera and taught him to how to work its buttons and dials. Beyond that basic instruction he is self-taught, and began to consider photography seriously in 1985 after a trip to London. His publications are few, and in fairly obscure magazines. Until recently he had not exhibited his work publicly. He left photography almost entirely for over a decade while earning a doctorate in medieval literature. Currently he is at work on three projects:
  • Look What I See — The melancholy beauty of our daily surroundings.
  • New Strangers — A continuation of the work begun twenty years ago depicting pedestrians in the American city.
  • Before I Knew I'd Miss You — Toward a personal and universal nostalgia.
